Autism: What is autism and what effects does it have on child development and education. Every child with autism is not the same. There are common characteristics used to diagnose autism but each child presents these characteristics differently. Every child in the autism spectrum has a particular learning ability or disability, they are unique so it is important treatment and education take an individual approach. Educating a child with autism includes not only academics, but also socialization, language, communication and behavior. Often regular education teachers have little or no knowledge about autism or the special needs these children may have. The ultimate goal for any child is to provide them with the skills to be independent, socially responsible individuals, therefore it is important for parents and teachers to obtain the resources and knowledge to provide the necessary social and educational support for their autistic children. Autism is classified by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) fourth edition, as: “A pervasive developmental disorder, a term meant to indicate ‘severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development: reciprocal social interaction skills, communication skills, or the presence of stereotyped behavior, interest and activities’ (65). Autism is part of a group known as the autism spectrum disorders (ASD),which include three major developmental disorders which are autism, asperger syndrome and pervasive development disorders not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). Autism has no cure and is a condition that will affect a person throughout their entire life span. Autism has a typical onset early in life usually before the age of three, some signs are apparent at birth and in most cases problems in communication and social skills are noticed as they start to lag
