Autism HCA 240 8/22/10 Autism Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first three years of life. It affects the brains normal development of social and communication skills. It is one in a group of developmental problems referred to as ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Experts estimate that two to six children out of every 1,000 will have autism. A Little History Sternberg (2003) states, “Leo Kanner was the first to coin the phrase early infantile autism in 1943” (p. 97-102). He once believed autism to be a psychologically caused disorder, resulting from faulty mother-child relations in early infancy. Today though, it is recognized as being biological in origin and not caused by any form of emotional trauma or deprivation. Signs and Symptoms Children with autism experience problems with social interaction, language development, and behavior control. In order to be considered an actual autistic disorder, it must manifest by the age of three. The following are some common symptoms associated with autism. Retrieved from the Mayo Clinic website, (August 19, 2010): Social skills • Poor eye contact • Resists being touched or held • Prefers to play alone • Seems to not hear at times • Has no response to others feelings Language Skills • Begins talking later than age two • Loses previously learned words or sentences • Uses different abnormal tones while speaking • Does not understand how to use words or phrases Behavior skills Acts repetitively, such as rocking, spinning, or flapping of hands Becomes bothered by change Always moving Sensitive to light, sound, and touch, yet has no sense of pain.
