Running Head: ATTITUDE TOWARDS TERTIARY STUDIES My Attitudes Towards Tertiary Studies. Su Weiwen Edith Cowan University Abstract In Singapore, having the right qualifications has been related to doing well in life. University studies are looked upon as something to strive for and to obtain it would mean one would have a better future. In this brief essay I will be writing and discussing my attitude towards university studies and how events in my life have helped to shape and form it to what it is today. It will look at certain key events which lead me to the conclusion that studying in a university although has it rewards and pros is not easy and it comes with it’s price. My Attitude Towards Tertiary Studies Education is a very big thing in Singapore. According to the Compulsory Education Act (Cap 51), which was passed by Parliament on 9th October 2000, it is the responsibility of every Singaporean parent to send their children, who have reached appropriate schooling age, to study in a national primary school and if they fail to do so, it can be charge as a crime. From as early as I can remember, my parents have always place a lot of emphasis on the fact that if I don’t do well in my studies then I will not be able to progress very far in life. They were always trying to help me excel in all my subjects by sending me for kindergarten or paying extra money to enroll me in with a tuition agency to help me get better grades. I know for a fact that it is not the Compulsory Education Act that made them do what they did but they were afraid that because of my bad grades I would be stereotyped as a bad kid and be discriminated all my life from my relatives, friends and future employers. My parents are one of the many factors that play a part in the formation of my attitudes towards studying at university. An
