By reading the principal’s speech, Richard was saying what the white power wanted him to say and to Richard this would be giving in to the very thing he hated so much. Richard was willing to leave school without a diploma instead of this. White people alienated Richard from his environment because he did not accept the way of life that other black people did. Richard’s relatives never understood Richard and because of this he was alienated from his family and his own people. Shorty is the young black boy who gets beat by the white people and jokes about it.
He also picks fights with all the other jurors, he even threatened to kill juror #8 after he called him a sadist. He expressed a lot of anger in his thoughts which changed the way a few jurors thought of the defendant. No one knew till the end when juror #3 started crying and revealed his sensitive side. The taunted person may even be told that they are not allowed to hang out with the other members of the group anymore because they will not follow the group in the things they do. The reasons boys and girls bully are similar. “Girls tend to get picked on if they wear glasses or braces or if they are too skinny or too fat” (Fanning). Over the years, “Boys have picked up on our culture’s ideas of what they are supposed to be. They bully each other about being a ‘wuss’ or not being strong enough” (Fanning).
Characterizations of big mouth and ugly girl. There are two main characters in this book. Big Mouth is Matt - a high school boy who tends to say things without thinking first about what he is saying. We know that as, when there is the rat incident, with everybody being scared, Bigger reacts by killing the beast brutally with a skillet. Also, he reacts with violence against White society as he’s scared of them. But, instead of keeping quiet and minding his own business, he feels the need to rob Blum’s, a white mans, store. However, in the end he doesn’t do it as he is in fear of being caught. Again, though he reacts to it by beating Gus, his friend, up using the excuse of Gus being late to get out of their 4mission.
The black man is convicted of raping the white man's daughter, and even though all charges are faced towards the white man lying, the black man is proven guilty. Atticus Finch receives a lot of hatred for his decision to face someone who is unlike him, and his children also hear a lot from the citizens of their town. The citizens of his town always thought of him as someone who they could look up to, but when he defies their initial trust with something that they could not even imagine, they start degrading him. In this way, the public expects too much from their public figures. It is also evident that public figures are faced with too many expectations in everyday life.
