Atoms, Molecules, and Elements Paper Cindy Chastain CHM/110 February 4, 2013 Earl Steven Gurley Atoms, Molecules, and Elements Paper According to “Dictionary”, the definition of atoms is the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of an element, consisting of a nucleus containing combinations of neutrons and protons and one or more electrons bound to the nucleus by electrical attraction. An atom is very minute; extremely small matter. A molecule is defined as the smallest physical unit of an element consisting of one or more atoms in an element. An element is a class of substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means. Elements make up the periodic table. Everything that can and cannot be seen is made up of atoms. Atoms form together to make molecules. These make up matter. This matter can be liquid, solid, or gas. The matter is where the elements make up the periodic table. Dmitri Mendeleev According to Tro (2009), Dmitri Mendeleev was a nineteenth-century Russian chemistry professor. He organized the elements in to a table, which became known as the periodic table. Mendeleev’s theory on the organization of this periodic table was to have the relative mass to increase from left to right and the elements to be aligned in the same vertical columns. Mendeleev placed the chemicals in group 1A of the periodic table as alkali metals. These metals are very reactive. Alkali metals are similar because they only have one atom in the outer part and are very reactive when combined with other elements. Halogens are listed in column 7A of the periodic table. Halogens are highly reactive nonmetals (Tro, pg 102). All halogens have seven (7) electrons in the outer shell. Noble gases are located in column 8A.
