Lost Worlds: Atlantis Atlantis, is one of the most famous lost cities known to date. It was said to have been demolished by a flood and earthquakes about ten- thousand years ago. Many researchers claim that Atlantis really existed. They also claim, that the empire included parts of Africa, Europe, Asia and Both North and South America. Others believe the Atlantean survivors were the ones who were responsible for constructing the pyramids. Plato said that, Atlantis was ruled by ten kings. The Temple was said to be in honor of Cieto and Poseidon.The story of the lost continent of Atlantis started in 355 B.C. with the Greek philosopher Plato. Plato had planned to write a series of books talking about the nature of man, creation of the world, and the story of Atlantis. The very first book was ever completed. Everyone admires the architecture and landscaping of Atlantis. The city was built with concrete walls along with canals. At the very middle was a hill, and on top of the hill there was a temple to Poseidon. Inside supposedly, was a gold statue of the God of the Sea showing him driving six winged horses (unmuseum.mus.pa.us/atlantis.htm). About ten thousand years before the time of Plato, after the Atlanteans became greedy and corrupt, the gods decided to destroy them. That's when, a violent earthquake shook the land, massive waves rolled over the shores, and the entire island sank into the sea, and never seen again. So, is the story of Atlantis just a tale told by Plato to make a point? Atlantis will always stay to be one of the world's most fascinating lost worlds. Knowing if Atlantis was real or not will keep scientists and others on their toes, filled with curiosity and what ifs.
