Athletic injuries, particularly in the weight room, are not given enough attention. I feel, as a personal trainer, I am one of the people responsible for making safety a bigger concern and raising awareness. PROBLEM/PURPOSE My article is titled, “Being safe in the weight room: proper supervision and correct form are critical in keeping athletes safe.” One of the articles main examples of safety neglect is an injury that happened in late September 2009 when University of Southern California senior running back Stafon Johnson suffered a traumatic injury to his throat and neck while completing bench pressing. The 275 pounds fell on Johnson’s throat as he was trying to complete the rep. This led to seven hours of surgery to repair his trachea.
It is common knowledge that the fear of failure is what drives Kobe to his infinite pursuit of excellence. I applied that same mindset to my summer training. I drove myself beyond the fear of not performing at a high level. I followed the same rigorous schedule everyday and rested only on Sundays, because of my involvement in the church my family and I attend. My schedule consisted of waking up early every day and taking a 1.5 mile run, followed by taking 500 jump shots, a similar exercise Kobe performed during his high school career.
I learned a lot about this career in a short 30 minutes, and have found this assignment to be very helpful in choosing to go into the career. My mentor was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico and graduated from Alamogordo High School. He attended Lubbock Christian University for four years and after graduating, enrolled in the University of New Mexico medical program. At LCU, my mentor took a course to become an Emergency Medical Technician but later wanted to study general surgery. After working as a general surgeon in Phoenix, Arizona for six years, he specialized in orthopedics in Cleveland, Ohio and now works at a sports medicine practice in Alamogordo.
I did this community service over spring break going on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for four hours. While being there I teach kids how to counter attack, how to defend counter attacks, and how to defend free kicks. Usually I set them up a few drills to work on and after an hour and a half; we let them do a scrimmage to see what they have learned and to let them take the drill to the real thing. I have had an amazing time at this site and will probably return to do more. The service of Grassroots Soccer has bettered my skills in working with kids of all ages.
Sports have been an enormous part of my life, and throughout my 15 years of age I have always wanted to stay involved with sports. Of course, when one is naive little kid, one always aims for the top. I personally was aiming to be a professional soccer player. Throughout my childhood all I thought about was being the best, and always had my mind set on my goal. The problem was that to reach my so longed goal, too much dedication was needed, and after witnessing what my college years would be, I was not willing devote myself to my dream anymore.
2. My interest in this subject is not a recent revelation. Growing up I played different sports, and played soccer throughout high school, which is what sparked my interest in exercise and physical activity. My freshmen year at Georgia Southern University, I took a first year experience course (FYE) called “Fitness for a Lifetime.” After taking this class my interest in grew and I declared my major to Exercise Science. From various courses I have taken pertaining to the subject, I already had a good amount of knowledge about maintain a healthy lifestyle, but over the past few weeks I have conducted research, so I can share with you all the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and also steps to take to become healthier.
