Principles of Safeguarding and Protection in Health and Social Care Physical abuse Physical abuse is when someone deliberately hurts or injures you; it can include hitting, kicking, pulling hair, beating with objects, throwing and shaking. No one has the right to hurt you in this way. Physical abuse can leave you feeling:- • Anxious and feeling fearful • Lonely and isolated • Depressed and sad • Worthless with low self esteem • Like you want to harm your self • Like you want to run away • Unable to concentrate at work/daily activities, eat or sleep properly. Signs and symptoms of physical abuse:- • May lash out • Anxiety • Become angry or violent • Burns, bruises or cuts • Fractures • Black eyes • Unexplained weight loss • Unusually quiet • Bed sores • Fearfulness • Withdrawn • Fear • Depression • Grip marks • Withdrawal from regular activities and social contact Sexual Abuse The Older Adults Protective Service Act defines sexual abuse as “intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causing or attempting to cause rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault or incest on persons 60 years older.” Besides sexual abuse, the Protective Services Act also covers sexual harassment whereupon a person forced, tricked, coerced or manipulated into any unwanted sexual contact. Signs and symptoms of sexual abuse:- • Loss of sleep • Acting overly compliant • Lack of appetite or other eating disorder • Torn, stained or bloody underwear • Worsening of existing illnesses • Confusion • Scared or timid behaviour • Difficultly walking or standing • Bruising on inner thighs • Genital or anal bleeding • S.T.I’s • Suicidal thoughts or attempts •
