In this assignment, I am aiming to identify a range of theoretical and practical approaches in assessment in my chosen specialism of Electrical installation and electrical Principles. I will look to examine different types of assessment methods and also types of feedback given to the learners in conjunction with the assessment methods that are carried out. I will also look to identify the need to guarantee equality and diversity is adhered too as far as possible throughout any assessment method that is used by my students.
So what is assessment?
The term “assessment” refers to all those activities undertaken by teachers, and by their students in assessing themselves, which provide information to be used as feedback to modify the teaching and learning activities in which they are engaged. (Black and William, 1998)
Assessment is a method of evaluating a person’s achievement throughout the given course and is focused primarily on measuring an understanding of knowledge and skills acquired by the learner and to be able to evaluate if the learner has gained enough to gain the desired qualification. Gravells (2007,P75) has the same opinion in that assessment is vitally important in order to determine whether the learners have gained the knowledge and skills needed to become competent and capable of passing particular aspects of the course.
There are many ways in which assessment can be carried out; some good examples of this are multiple choice questions, Verbal questioning, Practical demonstrations, Presentations and finally written work.
In this assignment I shall be looking at the 3 main types of assessment which are initial/diagnostic, formative or on-going and finally summative.
Before any of the electrical courses commence students who have applied for the course are invited in to do an initial and diagnostic assessment, this method allows us as tutors to determine the current level of the student and therefore helps us determine the starting point of the...
