Asses the role of the law in the area of sport? Introduction: Sport related law ranges over the areas of contract law, anti discrimination law, law governing performance enhancing drugs and at times criminal law. The aim of these laws is to promote safety to provide remedies for those injured, to regulate behaviour on and off the field and to ensure equal opportunity and fair treatment for individuals and groups who engage in sport. These issues involve many different stakeholders within sport other than sports people themselves including coaches, medical staff, government and sports administrators. Andrew Fifita’s, another NRL football player is currently considering legal action against the Canterbury Bulldogs. The matter unfolded when Fifita publically criticized the club and his decision to play for them, citing his want to play Rugby Union where he thought he could get more money. This became public following his making comments on social media. The bulldogs tan terminated his contract believed to be worth more than $800,000 for four years, plus a car. Reports indicated that this agreement was in the form of a memorandum of understanding signed by the player. Recent indicate that Fifita will be challenging this decision in court citing a breach of contract. Fifita has since committed his long-term future to Cronulla, signing a new four-year deal worth almost $2.5million last weekend.
