Assess the extent to which material deprivation is the most important factor in affecting social class difference in educational achievement?
Firstly I feel that material deprivation is the most important factor in terms of creating social class differences in educational achievement although there are other factors such as culture and school which also have an effect on this matter.
Material deprivation is not having the ability to afford consumption goods and to participate in activities that are common in society at that given point in time.   Evan though education and further education is free to the age of 19, material factors such as diet, health and housing all have direct effects on achievement in education, as for example if student is worrying about whether they are going to have a clean place to sleep, they are not going to be as concerned by whether they pass their science test the next day. Therefore Marxists will argue that the working classes are suppressed as they cannot afford such essentials that come so easily to the upper classes. Which means Marxists will also argue there is not an equality of opportunity for all students as upper class students have better recourses. Douglas in his research “The home and the school” found that poor housing conditions such as overcrowding and insufficient space can affect a student’s ability to study at home. Poor diets and higher levels of sickness through an inability to afford healthy food increases absences which mean the student will fall behind in lessons.   Low income will mean that parents will be unable afford educational books or tutoring in order to help the student pass. Although a criticism of his research would be that it was performed years ago and now changes to the education system have been made to counter act such material differences such as free after school study which means that students without a good working environment at home can still study after school.   Also in the majority of...
