Ash Wednesday Informal Ceremony Lent is a time of preparation for Easter. In the 40 day period before Jesus’ death on the cross as a living sacrifice, we find something to give up during this time as a reminder of the coming holy-day. You could give up junk food, coffee, social media, television, anything a part of your daily life that distract you from Christ. The six-week season of preparation for Easter are what we call Lent. In the early centuries, Christians who had constant sinful habits had ashes sprinkled over them as a sign of repentance. In Job 42:6, Job repented “in dust and ashes.” We signify our need for forgiveness and repentance by placing ashes on our foreheads in the shape of a cross. This sign of sinfulness signifies of the good news to come. Ash Wednesday gives us a chance to freely confess our imperfections. We all bear the mark of sin, we all stand guilty before a Holy God, we are all mortal and will someday experience a bodily death, therefore we need a savior. We stare death in the face today, in the assurance of real, eternal life. We can face death without fear because we know the One who defeated death. Beginning of ceremony: In the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit- The grace, the mercy and the peace of God the Father and Christ Jesus our savior, be with you. My brothers and sisters, the hour of God’s favor draws near, the day of His mercy and of our salvation approaches, when death was destroyed and eternal life began. As we begin this season of Lent, we gather today to acknowledge that we are sinners. As we express our sorrow, may God be merciful to us and restore us to His friendship. Prayer: I humble myself before you Lord, let these words not be mine but yours. Dear Jesus, thank You for waking us up this morning and allowing us to gather here in your presence, to recognize the period of fasting
