Macbeth progresses from crime to crime, which makes him develop from an admirable person into an evil being that shouldn’t merit pity from the readers. However, Macbeth does still deserve our sympathy, as once he is a noble general who battles for his country, and a person who remains righteousness when Lady Macbeth convinces him to murder King Duncan. Although Macbeth was slain by Macduff at the end, his honour and bravery should still have us retained commiseration for him. Macbeth steps forward from crime to crime after the murder of Duncan, which turns him into a very evil person at the end of the play. Macbeth in order to obtain the throne and the imperial power, he recklessly decided to kill everyone who was in his way. Odious Macbeth’s vaulting ambition has overcome his conscience and original noble quality. After the murder of Duncan, he also determined to kill people who would stop him from being King, including his best friend Banquo who was the one that went through fire and water with him in life. The act of betraying his only best friend mentioned in the play gives readers a turpitude image of Macbeth. His repulsive and despicable acts make readers annoyed and angry because he was no longer worthy of respect as he was at the start of the play. Macbeth should still deserve sympathy from the readers, as he showed human conscience in different stages of the play. Macbeth was only motivated by the witches’ prophecies and Lady Macbeth’s slyness and deceptive skills to kill King Duncan. In comparison, Lady Macbeth should be the one that receives no sympathy from the audience, as she is the real villain who plots the murder behind the scenes.
