Roy Lichtenstein Roy Lichtenstein was born in 1923 in New York. He went to a high school that did not offer art classes but he liked to draw and did so in his free time. After high school, Roy Lichtenstein went to Ohio University where he earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in fine art. In the 1960s, Lichtenstein became a leading figure of the new art movement, alongside Andy Warhol. Inspired by advertisements and comic strips, Lichtenstein’s bright, graphic images were a parody of popular culture. He died in New York City on September 29, 1997. The piece of Roy Lichtensteins’ art I have chosen is called “Girl with hair ribbon.” I really liked this piece and was drawn to it because I think you can see the emotion really well in the face of the girl in the painting, it is very emotive, the way in which she looks quite young but looks worried about something is relatable! I also liked the simplicity, I found it fascinating how something so simple can have so much impact. I think the use of very bright colours contributed to the impact of this painting also! The last reason I was drawn to this piece was because it reminds me of comic strips and also of simpler times! I found it difficult to pick just one piece of Lichtensteins actually, I liked many. He spent some time at Ralph Bakshi Studios as a background artist for the animated feature film Fire and Ice. Thomas Kinkade started exploring light and imaginative worlds and it was during this period that Thomas Kinkade acquired his name as The Painter of Light. Then in 1982, Thomas Kinkade married his childhood sweetheart, Nanette, and two years later Thomas Kinkade and Nanette began to publish his paintings together.
