Brook Antonio GEC 100/ Sharon Corbin W3D1 Article Analysis My first article is titled "Jay-z can fight racial profiling in retail." It's an article written from a commentary stand point by Roxanne Jones; former ESPN president, and co-author of "Say It Loud: An Illustrated History of the Black Athlete." Roxanne Jones is expressing her opinions related to rapper Jay-Z's affiliation to the luxury store Barney's. Barney's is in the middle of a racial profiling lawsuit. She hopes that Jay-Z will use his "celebrity leverage" to bring retail racism to light. Roxanne says, "Racial profiling has been “business as usual" for too long. Jay has the power to bring change. For example, Roxanne writes, "Jay-Z has ignored calls to dump the deal." She backs her statement with a direct quote from Jay-Z, "I move and speak based on facts and not emotions." This article also includes a little jargon in regards to her belief that Jay-Z should stand up to racism. “It wouldn't be the first time "dirty money" was flipped and used for a better purpose", Roxanne states. This article is solely the writer’s opinions and in my opinion the jargon was appropriate. With that being said, some of her sentences could use some revisions. For example, Roxanne writes "In some regions of the country, two-thirds are white women." This sentence could have been revised as: Two-thirds of women are white in some regions of the country. Overall I believe that this article will have no effect on Jay-Z's decision to collaborate with Barney's. I also believe this article will have little to no
