Darek C. Priddy ART100 02 October 2012 ART MUSEUM PAPER For my art museum paper I have chosen three pieces of art from the Huntsville Museum of Art. The three pieces are the following: “A Very Rare Bird” a mixed media on panel by Sloane Bibb in 2010, “Mercury” a mixed media on panel by Sloane Bibb in 2012, and “Swamp” oil on canvas by Mary Ann Pope in 2002. My paper will be critiquing these works of art in my point of view by how I interpret them in formal theory, contextual theory, and expressive theory. First I will write formal theories on each of the works of art that I have chosen. Then I’ll go into contextual theories on each of them. Then I’ll go in the expressive theory of each. Lastly, I’ll end the paper with how my…show more content…
“A Very Rare Bird” to me shows a time that is hurting from economic issues. I see this because of how the pieces that are used are old pieces of cars, wood, and just stuff that are found lying around. Instead of nice stuff and solid paint, the artists just used what he could and made a piece of art out of it. It also shows that since the times are hard economically that going back to the basics and enjoying life and nature is what it’s all about. “Mercury”, in my point of view for contextual theory, shows kind of the same time frame as “A Very Rare Bird”, maybe a little later in the hard economic time. But for the most part it symbolizes the same thing as I described about “A Very Rare…show more content…
The “A Very Rare Bird” piece I feel the artist is either not very wealthy or just loves to take time and view life in anything. He takes what he can and makes something beautiful and life like out of it. I feel it depicts the artist as a naturalistic person. Like he is an outdoorsman and loves to be in nature. Probably loves to fish, hunt, and I’m guessing work with old cars. Once again “Mercury” is to be the same as “A Very Rare Bird” because it is from the same artist and not too much time between the two pieces of art. The artist definitely likes old ford cars due to a lot of the parts being used in his artwork. In “Mercury” I can tell that he is very much into fishing due to the great detail in the fish’s body features as well as the colors he used. It’s almost lifelike, except for the car pieces he used to give it more of a fictional look. As stated in the paragraph before, the artist looks to be poor or in a bad economic state and making the best out of
