Library Research Assignment Art Appreciation Unit 5 IP Melissa Law American Intercontinental University During this assignment I will talk about three types of Work of Art from three different artists from the Baroque time period. Baroque is a period of artistic style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance, and music. The style began around 1600 in Rome, Italy and spread to most of Europe. (Brett & Kate McKay, 2010) The first is Michelangelo Merisi o Amerighi da Caravaggio; who was born Michelangelo Merisi or Amerighi, but most refer to him as Caravaggio. He was born in Milan on September 29th 1571 and died at the age of 38 on July 18th 1610. Caravaggio was actually quite famous while he was alive then once he passed away people seemed to forget about him until the 20th century. He was not a known name until he was contracted to decorate the Contarelli Chapel in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi. He made two works Martyrdom of Saint Matthew and Calling of Saint Matthew, and both were an immediate sensation. (Caravaggio. 2012) Secondly is Rembrandt van Rijn; born Rembrant Harmenszoon van Rijn in what is now the Dutch Republic which is now the Netherlands on July 15th 1606 and died at the age of 63 in October 4th 1669. He gained success in his youth as a portrait painter, but his later years were marked by personal tragedy and hardships. He was discovered in 1629 at the young age of 23 and a prince bought his paintings until 1646. Third is Peter Paul Rubens; born Sir Peter Paul Rubens in what is now Germany on June 28th 1577 and died at the age of 62 on May 30th 1640. He was considered a Flemish Baroque painter.
