Arranged marriages are marriages negotiated by the parents of the couples. In this kind of marriage, people sometimes are forced to marry the one that they do not love. For centuries, the only way to get married in most of cultures has been arranged marriage because it has been believed this kind of marriage makes the economic, political, social alliances stronger and firmer. Although in most Western countries people oppose arranged marriage because they think that this kind of marriage limits their personal freedom, it still occurs in parts of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Vietnam. Some casually date without their children involved and there are some that remarry. First of all, what is an arranged marriage? An arranged or pragmatic marriage is a “marriage planned and agreed by the families or guardians of the couple concerned” (Oxford Dictionaries). What was the psychology and logic behind this custom? Social impact to begin the dowry concept: The thing is, we were a part of a male dominant society and the girls were less educated to survive as well as to stand on their own feet. So, after a certain age, the girls' families were looking for the eligible bachelors with a good amount of resource. A girl's family gives an amount of money or precious things to the family of so called eligible groom as a deal to keep their immature uneducated girl as a bride. In that case it can be said that if an eligible bachelor needs dowry, then what is the definition of eligibility?
This could make the children draw away from the stepparent because they don’t like the control they are trying to bring into their lives; something they never had before. Having a stepparent often makes the relationship between the biological parents split apart as well. The child may become closer with the stepparent than with the biological parent depending on who spends more time with them. When a divorce takes place the mother normally receives custody of the child with the father getting the children on the weekends or for a lot of family’s every other weekend; this makes for the father to not have much communication with his children. Especially when the children grow up and start to get jobs or have activities going on with friends or school events they would like to attend, the father seeing the children may become even less.
Secularisation is also involved in why there are changing patterns of marriage due to churches being in favour of marriage, but as their influence declines, people feel freer to choose not to marry – according to the 2001 Cenus, 3% of young people with no religion were married, compared to up to 17% of those with a religion. High divorce rates mean divorcees are able to re-marry, however some churches do not marry divorcees. People are also now marrying later as people stay in education till later and are likely to cohabit first. In support, feminists see divorce as desirable as it shows that women are breaking free from the oppression of the patriarchal nuclear family.
