Based on reading “Around the World in 80 Days” by Jules Verne, and watching the movie which was produced in 2004, I will be discussing the characters in the movie, and compare them to the novel. I will also be giving my personal opinion about how well the characters were portrayed in the movie, and how well it kept its roots from the movie. First of all, I would like to say that I enjoyed the movie much more than the novel. I would also like to address the fact that the movie was supposed to be a somewhat different from the novel, mainly because of the actors who starred in the movie, the time period during which the movie was produced (which was very far away from the period in which the novel was written), and for comedic purposes. For example, Jackie Chan plays the role of Mr. Phileas Fogg’s valet in the movie; the fact that he was person to take the role of an originally French valet in the novel meant that there would have to be some workarounds for how he ended up in England, and how he was going to be “French” (because Mr. Fogg would only accept a French person as his valet). The way that they twisted the plot in the movie from the novel was perfect for Jackie Chan’s role: he still got to do his famous “improvised” fighting and actions scenes, and also say his usual comedic lines, and give the audience a good laugh without taking away from the overall plot from the novel and the main events that happened. He accepts Mr. Fogg’s request for him to be his new valet to hide from the English police (he did this after accidentally falling from a tree to where Mr.Fogg was working (Mr. Fogg just fired his old valet because he would not volunteer himself for an experiment). Jackie Chan fakes his name as “Passepartout” (pas…pour..tu?) and claims that his
