Crash of Continental Connection flight 3407, operated by Colgan Air. It was February the 12th, 2009 when the twin-engine De Havilland Dash-8-402 Q400 crashed in Buffalo New York. I remember seeing it on the news; I was frightened because I was flying in two months to Myrtle Beach on a Q400. After watching air-crash investigations, Stalled In the Sky, I was shocked to find out the cause of the crash. Captain Marvin Renslow, and first officer Rebecca Shaw, are at the controls during this flight.
You can see where a problem would arise here. The pilots would have no idea who they are dropping their bombs on, just what coordinates it is. Bombs were dropped on US soldiers everyday but more vital, local South Vietnamese. America might not have understood at the time but they were the biggest recruiter for their own enemy. Every village destroyed, brother killed, livestock murdered.
So after 22 months of preparation, the men from Easy Company boarded the C-47s and took off to Normandy to complete it first operation. They were to be dropped 10 miles from Ste. Mere-Eglise, where they were assigned to kill the German troops of the village and to seize the exit of causeway #2. Now this mission was really important since they needed the causeways to be secured as they were disrupting the forces of the U.S to advance inland. Now when Easy Company landed they got scattered all over the place.
I believe these quotes make the title because without these quotes/questions there wouldn’t be a title for this marvelous book. Just one last word from Dennis Delaney, “he said he was never prouder to be in the marines and that the reason we fight and are successful is
Suddenly I heard guns being fired and bombs erupting, we were under heavy artillery fire. Sargent Warren yelled out, "We are under attack by their patrol group!" The two days of training definitely did not suffice what was happening before my eyes; I was so scared and confused. I jumped into the shell-hole closest to me to escape the flying bullets. I could hear guns from both sides rapidly being fired off.
When the Black Hawk went down the objective of the marines was not only to get the target back to base, but also save the men in the crashed Black Hawk. While the marines made their way on foot to the crash site, another Black Hawk was giving cover fire for the survivors of the crash, when another RPG in the tail wing grazed it. The Black Hawk seemed fine to make it back to base but the tail wing’s propeller broke off and the Black Hawk crashed. While the marines were creating a area around the first crash site, A 3rd Black Hawk carrying two snipers got the “GO” to rescue the survivor of the 2nd crash site from the incoming militia. While the two snipers protected the one survivor, they were overcome and died in action, while the survivor who had been injured was taken hostage.
Scene 1: The Introduction (Lights are dim, scary music is playing in the background.) This number includes the innocent people on the planes, firemen, policemen and medical staff who had all gone to assist the crisis. A third plane then later crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the US military). 190 people died, including 64 passengers and crew who were on the plane. The fourth plane then later crashed in Pennsylvania after the people tried to retake the plane from the hijackers. 40 passengers and crew died.
On June 27 Operation Redwing was a go, they sent SEAL team 10 to capture or kill a dangerous al Qaeda leader. They came in the dead of night and dropped down by helicopter and were completely on their own. They circled around the village for hours trying to find a good vantage point for outlook. They didn’t see any Taliban soldiers around the village. They move up the mountain and encounter some goat herders who gave away their position.
I would go try to take the test and never finish because I felt I couldn’t do it. Until December 2011 I keep telling myself that if I didn’t go get it my kids would never have anything and I would be forced to live off the state or my mom. So December came along and I forced myself to go take that test. I was surprised to say I passed everything except my essay part. It took me two weeks to study for the next essay test and I passed with flying colors.
