Tammi Collins Enlish Comp 1 Classification Paper December 9, 2011 The U.S. military is services set up by the Department of Defense to protect and serve The United States of America. The United States Armed Forces dates back to 1775(American Military History). The adoption of the Constitution in 1787 gave Congress the power to raise and support armies, provide a navy and make rules for naval forces, as well as declare war. The Constitution names the president the Commander in Chief(American Military History). The President of the United States is the Commander in Chief of each branch of the armed forces. It was reformed in 1915 under the Treasury Department to the United States Coast Guard (Powers). In 1967, the Coast Guard was transferred to the Department of Transportation; later in 2002 it was transferred again to the Department of Homeland Security (Powers). The Coast Guard is the only branch of the United States Military that is not under the control of the Department of Defense. The Coast Guard is a military, multi-mission, maritime service within the Department of Homeland Security. Its core roles are to protect the public, the environment and U.S. economic and security interests against illegal immigrants in any maritime region, including international waters and America’s coasts, ports and inland waterways (Powers). The President has the power call upon the Coast Guard in time of conflict. The Coast Guard is the smallest military service. The Coast Guard is also supported by the Coast Guard Reserves, and a volunteer “Coast Guard Auxiliary” (Powers). Currently there is 27,000 enlisted Coast Guard on active duty (Powers). The first weeks of Coast Guard training will consist of a strenuous physical fitness program and the Company Commander teaches self-discipline(Basic Training). Later in training recruits learn small arms, seamanship, firefighting and damage control in a classroom setting(Basic Training). A basic pistol course is taught as a hands on class.
