(Card 19) Even in the middle of the book when Ender is confiding in Bean, he states that he felt he could not lose any of the battles, for some reason which he did not reveal (Card 197). This drive is so embedded into Ender’s personality that even he can not understand it himself, or it is so personal he can not even reveal it to one of his closest companions while at the school. This gives Ender a passion that soon boosts the rest of his army, and they too come to realize that being good is not enough; they have to be superior. Although these are just three characteristics that explain why Ender is such a great leader, there are many more reasons listed in the
Spurgeon and his father ended up getting into a fight about his father leaving with his mother’s car. Spurgeon knew that he had to stand up to his father and he did so. “But it must be fighting, I tell myself, that decides what matters, even if you’re left on the sidewalk to discover that what you thought mattered means nothing after all” (101). This shows us that Spurgeon is willing to do anything to keep his father and this again is because he has such great desire to reconnect with Ray Bivens Jr. “I try to pull him back, begging in the only way you can beg without words” (100). Spurgeon knew that he should not have let his father get away but he was unable to stop
But in hind’s sight, he wants his father to fight for his life and not give in. Emotionally, having to watch someone die is the worst thing that can happen to anyone. It is excruciating being that the person has no way to help this person while they are in pain. Although we are set to face imminent death one day, you always hold to the hope that you will continue to live as long as you can. This is what Dylan was trying to express to his father on his dying bed as he says, “Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day, rage, rage against the dying of the light.” Dylan’s father was a soldier, and as his son, he saw his father as a figure that could never die.
This was a great win under his belt because of the fact that he was the heavyweight champion now. Some fighters felt that he should not have had the chance to fight for the belt but Brock simply said “this is a business I bring publicity so they can get over it.” Then he
However Montiel didn’t allow this negativity and other’s attitudes and thoughts to go to his head and affect him. Instead he trained harder using what others said to realize that he must be really well equipped to fight for the championship. Even though it was believed that Montiel had all the odds against him he went forward and won the championship by way of TKO(Technical Knockout) in round four. Nobody could believe what they just saw, it was a victory that wasn’t suppose to happen because not only was the Japanese a better fighter, Montiel was already old in a boxer’s perspective. Even though his adversity wasn’t physical, it came at a mental level and would’ve demoralized anybody, yet Montiel believed in himself and went for something considered unreachable for him.
The war had greatly impacted his father’s personality, attitude and parenting style. Therefore Spiegelman’s personality and lifestyle were then influenced by his father's personality and parenting style. His father loved showing off how handy he was since that was one of his survival methods during the war. This made Spiegelman fearful to fix things because he was being compared to his father. Spiegelman felt he was always over shadowed by his father regardless of his own accomplishment because his father survived the war and he could not compete with that.
Doddle was obviously attempting to do something that may have killed him but he’d tried anyways. His brother being ashamed of him being invalid brother, wanted to train him run, swim, climb trees and fight. But because of his brother having to go to school and Doddle being sick, they were a bit behind they’re scheduled. They decided to double the efforts. “Wherever we went, I would purposely walk fast until Doddle face turned red and his eyes became glazed.” Doddle was trying to beat his disabilities but it was something he couldn’t have beaten.
The father's protectiveness is very evident many times throughout the novel, however one of the most notable events was when a man threatens his son with a knife and the father shoots the man in the head. Although this action was probably necessary, the fathers downfall is his suspicion that everyone is their enemy. His father's paranoia causes them to move constantly from camp to camp, consequently, never getting the chance to make friends with anyone. His son, on the other hand, is much more sensitive and innocent. He feels very safe with his father but at the same time he questions some of his decisions.
Being beat and taunted by his father made him want to become a super strong body builder so that his father could no longer tell him that he was worthless. Living in his brother’s shadow made him want to be better than him no matter what he did. These negative emotions even drove him to talk to doctors as a teenager and do research on steroids. Kids and especially teenagers, just want to have fun. Who dosen’t?
One battle consists internally, in which he struggles with personal issues since the death of his grandfather, while trying to find his own true identity and being content with it. The other battle is externally, which he actually makes physical contact with his own peer to prove his acceptance to the greater society of white men around him. While being very naive, he struggles to find himself in a serious predicament, fighting in a boxing ring to prove worthy of associating with the white men; however, he comes to a striking epiphany at the end of the story and discovers the true meaning behind his grandfather’s last dying words. In a sense, he matures after experiencing a series of events that took place in the Battle royal. This story also had a really good example of the “hero’s journey,” in which the speaker goes through series of event to end up back where he started, but with more knowledge then he set forth with.
