The War in Arizona At one point in history the United States cherished the acceptance of immigrants from all around the world, but today America is enforcing to cease that glorious flow of immigration. When these immigrants are denied to enter the land of opportunities they have no other choice but to jeopardize their lives to enter illegally. Particularly Hispanic and Latino immigrants who cross the 2,000 mile border must endure extreme temperatures, dehydration, and exhaustion. The United States has for long fought a battle against undocumented immigration, but there is no other state like Arizona that crackdown on undocumented immigrants. The law has been criticized by President Barack Obama who said, “Undermines basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe” (Archibolt). The anti-immigrant law has been also criticized by pop artist Shakira when she mentioned that the law is “inhumane”. The world has been keeping their eye on this harsh anti-immigrant law that will violate the civil and human rights of immigrants in the state. Legal immigrants will be wrongfully arrested just because they forgot a legal identification card at home. SB 1070 new provisions are unconstitutional because the Declaration of Independence clearly indicates all men are created equal, yet in Arizona this principle is not being applied on immigrants. The government of Arizona is dehumanizing undocumented immigrants from being humble, good moral workers to harsh criminals. The problem with police officers using “reasonable suspicions” to ask a person for immigration status will be based on police discretion. Past experiences or personal judgment will overcome a police officer’s decision making, and ultimately will target people of color…show more content…
We are long from solving the problem of undocumented immigration in the United States if the government continues to set laws like SB 1070. Probably the best solution could be an immigration reform that will set amnesty to millions of immigrants seeking the chance to succeed. No matter how though SB 1070 was, undocumented immigrants would not hide in the shadows forever. SB 1070 set fear within the Hispanic and Latino community because it was designed to solely target them. The future of Arizona is uncertain but one can predict it will be of many negative outcomes. Let us make progress in human rights, not any steps back in our harsh history of racism and segregation. One thing is for sure undocumented immigrants who come here for a better life will not lose faith to succeed even if SB 1070 is in the
