ANALYSIS OF PLATO AND TAO TE CHING AND IDEAL COMMUNITY It is common for ancient philosophers to have strict criteria to comply with in the development and defense of the generation of their respective societies. For example, Plato and Lao Tsu both offer their ideology of what a model community would look like in their books The Republic of Plato, and Tao Te Ching. In their respective books, Plato and Lao Tsu each provide an in-depth analysis of their distinct views of what constitutes an ideal society. Accordingly, both philosophers believe that their version of the ideal community would result in its inhabitants thriving and experiencing the best that life has to offer. In order to create the type of society that both Plato and Lao Tsu desire to emulate, it is critical that the ruler have the characteristics and qualities that will lead the respective societies in harmony with their philosophical principles.

Since the true path to happiness, according to Epictetus, is the attainment of virtue, we can all become happier by improving ourselves, whether morally or intellectually. Furthermore, Epictetus' philosophy of happiness would lead us to live less stressful lives if we came to worry about only that which we can control. Still, while I admire Epictetus and his philosophy, I do not believe that most of us could be happy purely through the attainment of virtue. I believe that social support and some level of material possessions are necessary for happiness; we cannot forever strive only for virtue. I do, however, believe that Epictetus had a strong point when he asserted that we should only, rationally-speaking, worry about what we can change -- what good is there in worrying about things we cannot
Education and religion are but two. Fulfilling the inner need thirst of knowledge was touched upon briefly by Plato. But even more current is the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson. The importance of honest, morally satisfying, work and respecting the property that is the result of that work is fulfilling.
Aristotle draws a distinction between superior and subordinate aims, believing Eudaimonia' is the end goal or purpose behind everything we do as people, and is desired for its own sake and therefore a superior aim. Aristotle also developed the idea of moral and intellectual virtues. The moral values are; courage, temperance, big-heartedness, generosity, high-mindedness, right ambition, patience, truthfulness, wittiness, friendliness, modesty, righteous indignation. The intellectual virtues are; practical skill, knowledge, common sense, intuition, wisdom; resourcefulness, understanding, judgement, cleverness. Aristotle then chose the four cardinal values from these lists, which are; temperance, courage, wisdom and justice.
