Argumentative Essay - Stem Cell Research According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Stem cells have the potential to develop many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. They can also be used as an internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive (page 1 Stem Cell Research Basics). There are two types of stem cells, embryonic stem cells and somatic or adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are Primitive (undifferentiated) cells derived from a 5-day preimplantation embryo that are capable of dividing without differentiating for a prolonged period in culture, and are known to develop into cells and tissues of the three primary germ layers (page 20 Stem Cell Basics). These types of stem cells are a cause of controversy because in getting the embryonic stem cells you are destroying the embryo which in other words is an abortion. But, stem cells have the ability to open many doors that have never been opened before. Stem cells are the answer to many of the major problems posed in today’s medical community. As noted in the Stem Cell Basics “primer” stem cells are very different than regular cells in the body, (A) they are unspecialized cells, (B) that have the ability to divide and renew themselves for a long period of time, and [C] they can potentially become a specialized cell. What these things mean is that (A) They can replicate themselves at a very high rate, (B) As it says in the Stem Cell Basic primer, “stem cells do not have any tissue specific structures that allow it to perform specialized functions. Though they cannot do any specialized functions and their own, scientists say that the stem cells can lead to specialized cells that can perform specialized functions. These cells include heart muscle cells, nerve cells, and blood cells.
