I had heard of the World Bank, though I had no idea what it was or its purpose. However, IMF was a completely new term to me. Logically, this will lead you to the correct conclusion: History was never my strong suit in school. Not for lack of interest; more like the opposite. I wanted to know all the little details, especially the “whys”, and in school, there was never time for those types of questions. We had a certain amount of time to cover a certain amount of information and asking additional questions was an impediment to getting it done. So I find this week's readings and the questions posed to actually stop to think about it very interesting. I was surprised to hear how many of the World Bank's projects have backfired on it. For example, Sobradinho Dam was built thanks to the World Bank's financial help. The purpose of building this dam, besides having water readily available, was to provide an extra source of power- hydroelectric power, and create job opportunities. A win-win situation, right? Why? Well, there are so many sides to a story. What I mean by this is that although something can seem like the correct decision to make, another can counter it. How so? Well, the World Bank is not usually the one to take the first step to offer financial help. People or organizations are usually the ones to request the help due to difficult situations, or in some cases, selfish motivations. As the first and loudest voice, the petitioner can set up the situation to make it seem like the problems are more serious than they are in reality, or can present the details that are most advantageous (for them), ignoring or silencing those that could be hurt by the project proposed by the
