Internet Censorship Do you know that children’s superhero all over the world, Superman, has been the reason for many children losing their lives? Watching superhero sensation Superman has made many children believe that they had abilities to fly resulting in them jumping off the roof of their house or from the balcony. All this, just to test their “powers”. Shocking isn’t it? Internet, a source of information, entertainment, business and much more, is a resource that is used by people throughout the world. Children as young as 5 are aware of what the internet is, and are even using it. Internet is easily accessible and is a huge source of information on all topics. Internet censorship is when certain information is manipulated by the government in order to control certain information that might hurt the sentiments of certain communities or that are not meant to reach children. The internet can be a very disturbing medium. Some things on the internet are strictly for the adult audience and should not be viewed by children. The internet contains explicit information that children who access the internet, can get exposed to. In this case, censoring the internet is a capable option as it prevents this explicit information from reaching young minds. Censorship allows the government to cut certain elements that might be age- inappropriate or sensitive. I believe that the practice of asking the age of the viewer on sites like YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo etc, is a commendable step taken by the government as it prevents elicit material from reaching children. Children are very impressionable and sites that promote use of illegal drugs, violence, criminal activity, gambling and sites that show hate speeches can have a very negative effect on children.
