In this country there is a great debate over whether or not to allow a parent to physically discipline their children. Florida Statute prohibits willful or threatened act that harms or is likely to cause harm of physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, abandonment, or emotional/mental injury. The Statute contains exemptions for religion, poverty, or corporal punishment (Encyclopedia of Everyday Law). This is the law that most Americans live their lives by. They run around unbridled and do as they please so long as they do not bother their mother or father. I have seen children hit their parents and tell them “NO” or “I don’t have too!” I have seen on the news of teens running away because the parents wouldn’t let them do one thing or another, and then they turn up dead or raped. I am one of the few and fortunate one of these children that ran away from home and my parents found me in one piece. I know that I ran away because of plain disobedience. I wanted what I wanted and no one was going to tell me otherwise. Most parents spank their children out of discipline because they want them to do well in life and become upstanding citizens and it is usually how they were disciplined.
Spanking children should be a decision that is left up to the parents and judged by the actions of the individual child. Not every child learns from a spanking. All discipline must be consistent and tailored to that child’s current needs. No child deserves to be abused, ever.
