Debate Ladies and gentlemen, we stand before you today defending the need for the establishment of capital punishment in Canada. Capital punishment or the death penalty is the act of executing one who has been found guilty of a heinous crime, the definition of which is determined by the state. Although this form of punishment has not been practiced in Canada since 1976, we believe that it should be reinstated into our justice system. This protocol is a necessity. It acts as a crime deterrent. It has the potential of saving taxpayer dollars that would otherwise be used to support a criminal’s life. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the sad truth. Does this inequality then, not encourage our impoverished population to pursue a life of crime? At least in prison they will have access to post-secondary education, sports programs, and nutritious food. Aside from this, by enforcing capital punishment on these criminals, we can guarantee that they will never again threaten the well-being of society. As long as they remain alive, there exists a possibility that that they will do it again. Whether it’s the case of John Straffen, who escaped multiple times from prison to kill again, or Joseph Drewbs who killed his inmate, it has happened and will happen again. It is the nature of criminals after all… So through the death penalty we can put an end to at least the heinous actions of these convicted individuals.
