Parenting. This word strikes fear in a number of young parents because it’s a whole new level of responsibility; many worry that they will not be good parents and will not be able to raise their child properly. Rex and Rose Mary Walls, from Jeannette Walls’ memoir The Glass Castle, are extremely strange people who live their life differently and it would seem like raising children would be a failure for them, but in the end, their kids grow up to be very decent adults. Both of Rex and Rose Mary are good parents because they demonstrate that they care about their kids very much, they raised them to be smart and able to see things for more than they are. The first thing that makes a good parent is not how you discipline your child or what classes they take, but it is to show that you care about them.
This could almost be dismissed as a hangover from traditional values or the result of still-prominent stay-at-home mothers, except that it remains true when both members are working full-time, and even in some cases where only the woman is in employment. One explanation given for the unwillingness of men to take part is that the male gender role has not been challenged as strongly as its female counterpart, so many men feel threatened on a primal level by the prospect of child-rearing and domestic labour. This is backed up by the fact that it is even more pronounced when the man is unemployed, suggesting he has a greater reason to feel insecure in his masculinity. As you can see, the system needs to change because its not helping some women at all, its hurting them. Furthermore, I believe that some children are better off with there fathers. When non-custodial fathers are highly involved with their children’s learning, the children are more likely to get A's at all grade levels (2007 National Center for Education Statistics). Some mothers are to busy doing meaningless things, and are not worried about the well being of there children. Highly involved fathers also contribute to increased mental dexterity in children, increased empathy, less stereotyped sex role beliefs and greater self- control (Abramovitch, H. 1997.
Not a man, of course. Back then men were viewed as superior because that’s all they were ever taught. “It takes a lot of dishes and a lot of washing up, for mum to build an athlete” (Fairy Liquid and the Olympics) this reinforces the idea that women do the household chores in service to the males of the house. The implication that housework is purely a woman’s work is completely unacceptable in today’s day and age where women are seen as strong and independent. The unequal distribution of domestic responsibilities has held women back for generations; it still today continues to hinder women’s progression in the work-place.
This means that this theory is much more valid and so can be applied to real life situations such as ensuring that a baby is immediately given to the mother after birth to ensure that they become attached. Having said this, this theory lacks historical validity. This is because it is sexist as it was put forward before the feminist movement in which women gained much more independence and no longer remained the primary caregiver. In the modern day there are many fathers who stay at home to take care of the infant while the mother goes out to work, these children do not always go on to form emotional problems. This shows that this theory needs to be altered slightly so as to apply to the modern day.
Week 7 Assignment 2 Through history women and the GLBT, community has been looked down upon as inferior to men. As time has proven to be a good thing for women especially the last decade because it has been a time of great advancement for women in the workforce and the outlook that society has on them. I think that people in the United States are also becoming more comfortable with the GLBT community. More people are able to express themselves for who they really are and people are becoming more open to the idea of love without limits. I think it is important to look back from where we have come and see the progress that is being made from where we started to where we are today.
Mother liked testing the children on what they knew and liked to keep things interesting. Dillard's mother was an intelligent women, she worked at home most of the time but was suitable for so much more. More folks were not suitable for higher positions in the world because the women belonged at home. “She was smarter than the people who designated everything she had to use in her everyday life.”( ) Many women are afraid or feel intimidated by men or others for not being capable or as smart as men. Dillard's mother isn't afraid to stand up for her self and speak what she knew.
It occurs equally in men and women, usually in early to middle adulthood (WebMD, 2012). A person who desires the acceptance of others and is also attached to another is what would be described as an individual with Dependent Personality Disorder. This individual diagnosed with this disorder would find it hard to make their own decisions, have issues accepting criticism, and have little to none self-dependency of their own. These symptoms help explain why Susan Smith may have had the ability to live a normal life because she was pleasing others, which lead to her taking the life of her children to please another man. Susan Smith thought she was being raised by two loving parents, but it turned out to be with a mother that was blind to the fact that her daughter was being abused by a man that played the part of daddy.
The husbands acted more masculine and expected things to be done such as cooking, cleaning, and balancing the checkbook. That was just the way things were back then, the men were expected to act a certain way and the women were also to act a certain way. In “Everybody Loves Raymond” it proves to be a bit different than in “I Love Lucy.” Ray and his wife Debra don’t really act like the husbands and wives do in “I Love Lucy.” Ray typically acts more like a woman. He seemed to be worrying and complaining a lot. He does not show that “toughness” that we generally associate with the man of the house.
The only things women were “good for” was taking care of their children and husband. Women has many obligations and very few choices, it was a women’s obligation to take care of her family as well as, clean, cook, sew, knit, and basically do anything and everything her husband asked or demanded. Women were more salves than actual wives. They were owned by men, whether it was her father, brothers, cousins, and/or husbands, they were viewed more as property than actual humans. Girls had to learn this life style at a very early age, if their mothers were busy gathering food; the daughter was to maintain the household.
