In a school there are many other people to consider as your team rather than just the people you work with closely on a daily basis. Knowing and executing your role as an individual to the best of your ability allows you to be a valued member of any team. It is also essential to know the roles of those around you. This allows you to fully understand and support each other. By working as a team you can gain valuable knowledge from those who are more experienced than you, but it also allows you to suggest newer and fresher ways to approach learning.
Coaching or mentoring new employees is also a great way to train employees and it has the added bonus of a more personal touch that can be very effective. Managers should always monitor the training process to make sure that the benefits of the training program are maximized. The training process consists of three phases: (1) needs assessment, (2) development and conduct of training, and (3) evaluation. (Gomez-Mejia, et al., 2010 p. 250) The needs assessment phase identifies the needs and the problems that need to be addressed in the training program. Evaluations were done together with the parents while treatment was done one on one with the child. My supervisor has years of experience as an occupational therapist and was very helpful. I watched my supervisor as she was teaching the children how to discover new motor functions. Volunteering was a great opportunity for me to enrich myself in information I need for my career goal as an occupational therapy assistant. Not only have I gained more knowledge in the field of occupational therapy, but I have experienced hands on the tasks that occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants perform.
I think the reason this equation Performance = Motivation x Ability is used mostly in management is because these are factors that can be manipulated by leaders. They can hire the people with the right abilities for the specific job they need and also improve ability with training. There are also several ways, which we have learned in this chapter, that managers can apply to motivate their employees. Some argue, which I agree with, that you can create your own opportunities. This is somewhat true as well.
As a member of management it is even more vital that i am aware and up to date with all the legislation and guidelines as part of my role is to guide, support and influence other staff to do well in their own role.
