The incidence of cancer cases increase with age and can be strongly affected by gender, ethnicity, genetics, lifestyles or infection. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2011 there will be 240,890 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed. There will be 33,270 deaths reported from prostate cancer, second only to lung cancer. Another way to look at these numbers, statistically speaking is that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer within his lifetime, and about 1 in 36 men will die from this form of cancer. Screenings are important in detecting cancers where there may be no apparent symptoms. Prostate cancer may not show signs until it is too late, or until it has spread. Regular testing is important and should start as early as age 50 or even earlier if you have a family history of prostate cancer, this is the standard set by the American Cancer Society. There are two main ways to screen men for prostate cancer, although the effectiveness has recently become the target of many questions. The first test is a lab test or blood work that can be monitored and checked with routinely, it is called a PSA test or prostate specific antigen. This test is not always accurate and can even be elevated when there is no cancer present; this is known as a false positive. It has been said by those with prostate cancer that they believe through experiences of their own, that it is most important in how fast the PSA numbers climb as to the increased risk of having a rapid growing cancer. PSA is mostly found in semen, but a small amount is found in the blood as well. The standard is when it rises above 4ng/ml, if not done earlier; a deeper diagnostics should be initiated at this time.
