Application: Applying Theory to Specific Settings and Populations Career Counseling In this paper will describe a work setting and population that would benefit from the two theories selected. A summary will be provided of the two theories and a comparison of the two. The strengths and weakness will be provided as these theories relate to the setting and population. An explanation of how the weaknesses will be addressed will be provided and an explanation of how these theories can be applied in practice. The setting and population of choice that would benefit most from the Holland’s and Self-Concept theory would be a high school setting with transitioning youth. The theories were selected for this setting and population because high school students are preparing to make the transition from adolescence to adulthood. In this transitional state, providing students with career options and stable self-concept will help students toward more satisfying career paths. The Holland’s theory proposes that career interest is an expression of one’s personality. According to Holland, everyone’s career interests could be summarized into six typologies, which include realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional. (Creager, 2012) The Holland’s theory also proposes that career environments could be arranged into similar typologies. (Creager, 2012) According to the Holland’s theory, individuals seek career environments that permit them to exercise their abilities and skills, and to express their values and attitudes (Creager, 2012). The Self Concept theory proposes that career choice and development is a process of developing and implementing one’s self-concept. (Creager, 2012) According to the theory, a stable self-concept should develop in late adolescence to function as a guide to career adjustment and choice (Creager, 2012).
