Block 2 In the first century when Buddhism was spread to china, the Chinese people had mixed feelings about the reactions. Many Chinese people liked Buddhism and its teachings and others didn’t like it at all. Other didn’t have an opinion on weather they liked it or not. Documents 1 & 5 don’t disagree or agree with Buddhism. Documents 2 & 3 support Buddhism, while documents 4 & 6 discourage and go against it. Documents 4 & 6 both discourage Buddhism in china in the first century. Han Yu the leading Confucian scholar preaches against Buddhism by saying, “…Buddhism is no more then a cult of the barbarian peoples spread to china.” He is trying to get the lower ranked people to agree with his opinion. In document 6, it blames Buddhism for many issues and problems happening in China. The person who wrote this document is Tang Emperor Wu. He is trying to influence people’s opinions on Buddhism. Documents 2 & 3 both support the teachings of Buddhism. Document 2 talks about all the joys and happiness from joining the Buddhist religion. Since the author, Zhi Dun, is of the upper class, it seems that he was trying to persuade the people under his rank to look into Buddhism and start practicing it. The author of document 3 seems to be answering questions from an anti-Buddhist with common Buddhist knowledge. Every question he is asked, he has a logic answer for it. Document 1 & 5 neither are for or against the spread of Buddhism in china. They deal with it by making a compromise. Document 5 explains how the authors weren’t for Buddhism but not against it either. He tries to compromise the conflicts between the two different belief systems in china.
