AP Lit Glossary * Alliteration: Grammatical term meaning two or more words starting with the same sound in a row. Example: A poetic line or stanza, or in close proximity in prose “Why not waste a wild weekend at West more Water Park?” * Allusion: a literary device that is a reference to a well-known person, place, thing, and/or actual or fictitious event. Example: "He was a real Romeo with the ladies." * Ambiguity: Use of language in which multiple meanings are possible. Example: They are looking for teachers of French, German and Japanese Meaning 1: "Are they looking for teachers who can each teach one language?” Meaning 2: ‘Are they looking for teachers who can teach all three?” * Analogy: Comparison of two things that are alike in some respects. Example: Metaphors and similes are both types of analogy because they are both comparing elements. * Anaphora: Regular repetition of the same word or phrase at the beginning of successive phrases or Clauses, Example: "We shall fight in the trenches. We shall fight on the oceans. We shall fight in the sky." * Anecdote: A brief story or tale told by a character in a piece of literature Example: A parable from the Bible. * Antithesis: The complete or exact opposite of something Example: Hot cold, Bitter Sweet, Student teacher ect….. * Aphorism: Concise statement expressing a general truth or wise observation often in a clever way. Example: "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him." * Apostrophe: A figure of speech in which a person, thing, or abstract quality is addressed as if present. Example: The invocation to the muses usually found in epic poetry. * Assonance: The repetition of identical or similar vowel sounds. Example: In the phrase "Do you like blue?” the "oo" (ou/ue) sound is repeated within the sentence and is assonant.
