AP Environmental Question Removing the contaminated soil from the City of Fremont’s brown field is not the correct method to go about purifying the land. One reason this would not be a good choice is the exorbitant expense the project would require. The average cost to clean up 1 acre of toxic soil stand at 1,000,000. For a small town this would be a challenging job to come up with such a large amount of money. More over, they would fruitlessly be moving the soil to another location, which would then be contaminated, never actually fixing the problem. Secondly dirt removal can also be harmful to the surrounding environment. The brown field is said to be located along a river. There is a very high chance that as the ground is being excavated, parts of the riverbank will begin to erode. This would cause the toxic soil to be swept into the river. Consequently, that the toxins would leach in the water. They would have the ability travel almost anywhere. Down into the nearby lake, which might be the town’s water supply, or by the local swimming hole where people swim. The toxins could also harm fish or any wildlife that resides in or around the river. A better option then the soil removal is Phytoremediation. Phytoremediation is the use of plants to decontaminate polluted earth. The greens pull metals and radionuclides out of soil or water. They act as solar pumps. This method is preferable for the environment because it uses plants versus machine. As a result of the sun’s power the green plants detoxify the soil. Once the plants have finished purifying, they can be dried, ashed or composted. In some cases the medals can even be taken from the plants and recycled. How ever there could be a down side to Phytoremediation. In this particular location Phytoremediation could influenced the adjacent river.
