They can be classed as anti-bacterials, antivirals, antifungal etc.Antibiotics are by far the most widely used antimicrobial. But the recent era has seen an increase in antibiotic resistant organisms. There have been major concerns particularly with methacillin resistant staphylococci, pneumococci resistant to penicillin and macrolides, vancomycin resistant enterococci; multidrug resistant mycobacterium tuberculosin etc. bacteriophages show great promise as an alternative therapy to treat infections. The concept of phage therapy has had immense applications especially in medicine. The concept of phage display is very valuable in the production of monoclonal antibodies and in drug development. In the following article I focus on the implications of phage therapy and also certain limitations and discuss issues regarding patenting of phage products.
