The Implications of Anti-Depressants on Todays Society Candace Szevery 300198141 November, 20th/2013 PSYC-1200-015 Bryan Nadeau The Implications of Anti-Depressants on Todays Society Depression is a mental/mood disorder or now known as a biological disease, which is widely described as a persistent low mood behavior, and is usually accompanied by low self-esteem and or by a loss of interest in normally enjoyable activities. So why are doctors prescribing medication that enables the same characteristics of depression people are trying to escape. Antidepressant medication, may relieve some depression symptoms. Since depression lacks consistency, it’s difficult to track feelings down in a way that people can deal with them without help. Most people have trouble seeking help or are uncomfortable in telling a stranger their problems. Hence, why people now a days are eager to ask their doctor for a quick fix medication. Its usually best to just take time for one self to think, with out the pressures of everyday life. In this way depression can also work as “taking a break”, everyone needs a break sometimes. That’s why there are breaks at work a time to reflect. “Some may find writing in a journal may also help, occasionally writing down your emotions helps a person to get organized or organizes their thoughts, confusions and the way they feel overwhelmed.” (Thompson, p 87) Also, exercising increases your serotonin levels. Which means some of the “not-so-great” feelings one might be having may get better with exercise. Keep yourself active whenever possible, If all else fails and still they don’t see any results, dealing with it on their own. It does eventually feel good to talk to someone (counsellor, therapist, friend, parent, sibling, teacher, etc). Because unless depression is what one needs, it is not something people can effectively deal with alone. The issue growing today is the pressures of society; media, work, financial, social, and cultural. It can be overwhelming enough just to create a plan to overcome all the negative thoughts that interfere with doing just the simplest task. People now a days don’t have the time, it’s easier to just take a pill. Studies show that the benefits of depression medication have been exaggerated, with some researchers concluding that when it comes to mild to moderate depression antidepressants are only slightly more effective than placebos. Doctors are not the only ones to blame; lawmakers have to take ownership and responsibility by creating tougher regulations
