One of the major mental illnesses during the war was shellshock. Shellshock war the reaction of soldiers from the trauma of battle. After a long period of time in the war the soldiers would lose all self control because of the constant bombing, shooting and fighting (Wikipedia). Symptoms of shellshock were tiredness, irritability, giddiness, lack of concentration and headaches (Spartacusschoolnet). From 1914 to 1918 there were 80,000 men from the British army suffering from shell-shock (spartacusschoolnet).
We carpet-bombed schools, hospitals, temples and regular old neighborhoods in Hanoi for months because the North Vietnamese wouldn't stop their leaders' war being conducted in South Vietnam. Without a twinge of guilt. So. You are a torturer, an assassin, a murderer and a terrorist in the eyes of the world. Yes, you.
The draft system provided the war up to 40,000 young men a month. There were many young men claiming to be against the war for moral, religious, and spiritual reasons hoping to be a conscientious objector. A noticeable conscientious objector was heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali. There were many men fleeing the country to avoid the draft and there were also men who did not even register for the draft. Another large reason Americans opposed the Vietnam war was the casualties.
The groups started to rebel against the government and that’s when all hell broke loose. 20,000 soldiers in the Janjaweed army raped women and children and slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Darfur's population. The government soldiers destroyed all crops, cut down fruit trees, poisoned water supplies, and slaughtered all cattle. The people had been pushed into the desert or into camps in nearby Chad. This was not genocide for the sake of ethnic cleansing, but one in which huge numbers of people were slaughtered in hopes that those who survived would stand a better chance under conditions.
These numbers mean tragic and brutal deaths in addition to the separation of countless families. Equally abhorring is the repercussion of chemical warfare. According to Jason Grotto in his newspaper article, ”A Tainted Peace”, thousands of gallons of herbicides and defoliants were sprayed over fields of crop and villages by the U.S. to target the Vietcong—southern Vietnamese rebels who supported communism—and their food supply (1). The result of the spraying is indisputable as stated by Grotto that 5 out of every 100 children in Vietnam are born some form of physical or mental abnormality, a four times increase since the start of the war (1). This places an immense strain on society as so many children are born with severe deformities—including babies born with organs on the outside and missing external body parts.
It often came down to hand to hand contact and quick thinking. This war scared almost all the soldiers for life, the ones who lived through it all at least. The total number of US casualties in the Vietnam War was 58,220. The ones who did live didn’t get a welcome home either. When the Vietnam Veterans returned back home they were treated worse than some of the terrorists now a days.
The bombing of Dresden in World War II was one of the destructive events in history, killing more than 30,000 people. Kurt Vonnecut was an American soldier who experienced this first handed when he was captured and held at this city. As result of this event, he wrote the anti war novel Slaugtherhouse-Five or The Children's Crusade: A Duty-Dance With Death, where the main character, Billy, a American soldier who was also captured and experienced the bombing of Dresden. In the book, Vonnecut condemns war by using black humor, a genre of satire that make fun of serious, to describes events such as death and being captured in the war to shows stupidity and illogicalness of war. On the morning of March 16,1968 during the Vietnam War , a atrocity and violence against the village of My Lai in South Vietnam occurred .US Army troops were send to destroy everything in the village . Approximately from the 700 inhabitants , 504 innocent and non-combatants women , infants , elderly and young children Vietnamese were killed in three hours and by the Americans machine gun and weapons . Many were also Sexually assaulted , tortured, or mutilated in on of the most horrifying atrocities of the entire bloody conflict . Before the My Lai Massacre , the US Army and the Charlies Company , had suffered many attacks via booby-trap or land mine, resulting numerous injuries and many deaths . This protest could be seen as the beginning of the end for Tsar Nicholas II as he called his army to open fire on all the protesters, killing several hundred protestors. Because of the high death count this event is known as ‘Bloody Sunday’. This caused more people to lose respect for the monarchy and began to lose loyalty from his army, an example of this would be in June 1905, the crew of the battleship Potemkin rebelled in the Russon-Japanese War. Because of this Nicholas was faced with two choices, a continuence of the current condictions or consitiutional reform. The reforms that Nicholas signed in October 1905 promised the people of Russia, civil liberties, freedon of speech, freedom of assembly and that no laws are to be introduced without the agreement of the Duma.
The Draft Affects All Over 58,000 U.S. military personnel died in the Vietnam War. 17,725 of the combat deaths were draftees (“Vietnam” 2). The aftermath of the war left thousands of American citizens homeless, jobless, and without family members. In 1975, an abundant number of citizens protested that the draft was unethical, which eventually led to the removal of the draft. This topic has become important because of our position in the The Iraq War, also known as the Second Gulf War.
