Anti Gay Marriage Essay

Opposition to Gay Marriage Gay marriage has been a topic of great debate lately in the United States, and the recent ban on gay marriage has sparked hundreds of protests nation wide. Many Americans do no think gay marriage should be an issue, and that gays should have the same right to marry as any other loving couples. Others argue that gay marriage would not affect our society negatively and that we all would even benefit form it. I on the other hand disagree, and think that marriage between two same sex individuals would be of no benefit to society. Many people seem to treat the issue of gay marriage as a civil rights issue. But gay marriage is not a civil rights issue because the state recognition of marriage is not a universal right. States do not only deny marriage between same sex couples, but also regulate marriage in many ways. About half of all states prohibit first cousins from marrying, and all do not allow marriage of closer blood relatives. In every state it is illegal to marry more than one person. Some states even restrict the marriage of individuals with certain venereal diseases, such as syphilis. Therefore not only making homosexuals the only group of people being denied to marry the person they choose. By mentioning all of these other couples I am not claiming them to be the equivalent of homosexual couples. It is just an example to illustrate that marriage is heavily regulated, and for a good reason. When the state recognizes a couple as married, it grants them benefits that are both costly to the state and other people. And I do not believe homosexual couples should be entitled to any benefit associated with marriage. Marriage between two unrelated people of the opposite sex is more likely to result in a family with children, and these families that contribute to the propagation of society are of state interest.
