What is anti-discriminatory practice? Anti-Discriminatory practice simply describes the action taken to prevent or curb any form discrimination against individuals, races and communities. (Ask, 2013) Within the work place it is important to promote anti-discriminatory practice and in government departments. This is because it takes into consideration how people behave towards each other and how employers treat employees. In so doing, equality is promoted and services are provided equally and fairly. Promoting anti-discriminatory practice Ways in which care worker can promote equality, value diversity and respect the rights of service users is to always put the patient/service user at the heart of the service provision. (answers.yahoo.com, 2012) Service provision; ‘A service provision is a service a business offers instead of a physical product. These services are treated in the same way as a product, with a cost and even varieties of types, depending on the business.’ (ehow.com, 1999-2013) If the health and social care environment puts the service user(s) at the centre of the provision, it creates a happier and more stable environment as well as ensuring that service users are happy and healthy. Care workers can help achieve this by; • Trying to understand what it is like to use those services • Involving those who use the services in all aspects of their care and development at all levels • Providing service users with information they need to make informed choices about their own care and making decisions about the way services are run. • Ask service users what they would like and prefer instead of making decisions for them An example of anti-discriminatory practice within the health and social care setting; A primary school is holding auditions for a school play.
