Ara Lee Quiz Section AE Observation #1 Upon arrival to the First Nations meeting, a club dedicated to Native American and First Nation topics, a few things were already very noticeable. Most members were wearing some sort of Native Art or tribal print. A few even had hats or sweatshirts that said “Native Pride”. The chairs were arranged in a circle so that everybody was facing each other. Since there were a few new people attending they went around in a circle and introduced themselves along with their tribe. When each individual said their tribe there was usually someone else who would go “oooh” or “ohh yeah” because they had ties to this tribe or reservation. They begun by talking about the Columbus day rally and a few people even raised their hand to offer to speak at it. Then, the president of the club told them about a “sweat” they could participate in and almost everybody signed up. Then, they put all of the club veterans in the middle and had the new, younger members do “speed dating” to find a mentor. Each new member would talk about their goals and ask the mentors questions, then after about 5 minutes they would rotate into a different seat in front of a new mentor. I overheard a lot of slang and terms I have not heard before that you would typically hear in a Native American community or on a reservation/reserve. One of the individuals I heard using this slang is in one of my classes and the way she speaks in class or to the professor is extremely different than what I hear from these discussions. They finished by telling the menthes to write down two names of mentors they’d like having so one could be arranged for them. When the club meeting was done nobody really seemed to leave— people gathered around and talked, and the few people that did leave left in small groups with each other.
