Anthem Essay Equality 7-2521 reinvents a marvel that world has not seen since the unmentionable times many years ago. Even after this invention is shared with the World Council, Equality is rejected and was recommended for the detention center for not following conduct. This is just one example of how the conformity of a society can be completely blind. If something that could help change the world is right before one’s eyes, and they choose to ignore it because of what a group of people say is right, then they have lost all sense of individuality. People, who believe that just going with the flow is acceptable, have truly hit rock bottom. If it was not for the fact he stumbled upon the underground tunnel, and he didn’t notice the materials, he would not have invented the light. At a rather depressed moment of the story, Equality recites, “We know these things, but we do not care. We care for nothing on earth. We are tired” (Rand 76). Once again, Equality does not know how to identify himself as an individual, because he was never taught about being himself. He feels dejected from society because of his abstract thinking. When the World Council announces that they must destroy his evil invention, Equality feels hurt. After The Golden One comes to find him in the forest, they venture to where a house from the unmentionable times stands. After extensive reading, Equality finds the word “I” and understands that individuality exists and is important. Equality begins to utilize this word that will soon be his “God” as he refers to it. “But I still wonder how it was possible, in those graceless years of transition, long ago, that men did not see whither they were going, and went on in blindness and cowardice, to their fate” (Rand 103).
