Text Assignment ------------------------------------------------- Key Passage 1aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa a) Baba doesn’t listen to other people’s advice and insists on drawing the blueprints for the orphanage instead of hiring an architect because he wants to show his independence and that he doesn’t necessitate help from others. He wants to show he is able to do this on his own. The author highlights Babas sense of self dignity and independence. b) Baba personally funded the entire project because it was his idea and blueprints. He wanted the orphanage to be something that he could be proud of and to show others of what he can do. c) Baba is a respected figure in society. He has created a reputation which can be said to be high class. He is depicted as a man of supremacy. Amir wants to be like his father; however he thinks he can never match up to him. He is said to be Baba’s son however his disposition makes the reader doubt Amir has what it takes to become like his father. d) Amir lies to his father because he doesn’t want anyone else interfering with quality father/son time. “I wanted Baba all to myself”. Also a lot of times Hassan was there to ruin whatever bosom moment Amir was having or could have had with his father. e) Amir had gotten jealous of Hassan because Hassan could skip more stones across the lake than Amir, and Baba had applauded Hassan instead of Amir. Hassan can skip 8 stones whereas Amir can only do 5. “Baba patted Hassan on the back. Even put his arm on his shoulder.” f) “The water was a deep blue and sunlight glittered on its looking glass-clear surface.” g) Baba isn’t really engaging with Amir, his concentration was on a speech he was preparing for the next day, flicking through pages and making notes. He answers to Amir’s questions with a grunt.
