Q: Describe the Maslow’s need hierarchy Theory and discuss its practical implications for Organization. Maslow’s need hierarchy theory is a widely known human motivation theory. It was developed by Abraham Maslow in 1940. Abraham Maslow who was a Psychologist by profession developed this theory based on his professional observations. Maslow’s need hierarchy theory explains that needs of an individual arranged in a hierarchy, and people are motivated to fulfill higher needs as lower ones are satisfied. To explain his theory, Maslow has identified 5 categories of needs and arranged them to a hierarchy as shown in below. Maslow explains physiological needs as basic needs of a person. Every person needs food, water, Air, Shelter as their basic needs. Once the physiological needs are fulfilled person next moves to safety needs. Safe environment, Stability are fulfilled in this level. After basic needs an employee next looks for stale job, decent salary, job security. Third step in the hierarchy is belongingness. As Maslow explains when an Employee has safety he looks for belongingness. Employee looks for friends, peers and to they look to be in groups. They need attention and interaction of the others. Fourth step an employee looks to fulfill esteem needs. He/ she looks for respect with in his circles. They want organization to identify their achievement and recognition. Maslow explains people look for self-actualization as last step in the hierarchy. Self-actualization is where person looks to realize their full potential. In Maslow’s theory it is explained that four lower levels of needs are called Deficiency needs. They are activated only when they are not fulfilled. Once they are fulfilled they don’t motivate for future. But the Final level of needs are called growth needs. The more you try to full fill that level further they grow. As explained in this theory,
