When people focus too much attention on our bodies, these preoccupations can possibly severely affect our well-being, relationships, and personal lives. Too many people look at individuals suffering from Anorexia nervosa as a cry for help, I believe there is an outlook on this eating disorder that is very wrong. It is without any doubt that cases of eating disorders have increased since the last half century. Nine out of 10 people with anorexia are female and one in every 100 U.S. women is anorexic. A person can be considered anorexic when her weight drops below 15% of normal (Edmundson). Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by an abnormal pattern of eating behaviour, relentless pursuit of thinness, an intense fear about weight gain and a twisted perception of body shape. This essay is on the matter that Anorexia nervosa is a disease, not a lifestyle choice or a cry for attention that some individuals seem to think it is.
Anorexia is an eating disorder that could result in life-threatening consequences. People suffering from anorexia starve themselves by eating a limited amount of food in very small portions. People with anorexia become so malnourished that they have to be hospitalized. Even at the point of hospitalization they still say there is nothing wrong. Eventually they become dangerously thin even though they still look in the mirror and see themselves as overweight (Edmundson). Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric illness characterized by irregular eating behavior, severe self-induced weight loss, and psychiatric comorbidities (Ehrlich). There are two subtypes of anorexia nervosa: a restricting type, characterized by strict dieting and exercise without binge eating; and a binge-eating/purging type, marked by episodes of compulsive eating with or without self-induced vomiting and/or the use of laxatives or enemas (Sherk).
