Animal Farm Prose Analysis In the following extract from Animal Farm by George Orwell, it describes how the farm has grown richer but the riches go to the dogs and pigs. At this point in the story Napoleon has taken over Animal Farm and has become the new leader. In this passage Orwell uses propaganda, symbolism and characterization to reflect the central message that power negative influences the farm. In the passage Squealer uses elements of propaganda to convince the other animals that the pigs have a very important purpose on the farm. Through the use of obfuscation Squealer manipulates the “dumber” class of animals on the farm to believe that even though they cannot see the pigs working they are the ones that are making sure the farm is functioning. This is portrayed in “Squealer told them that the pigs had to expend enormous labours every day upon mysterious things called ‘files’, ‘reports’, ‘minutes’ and ‘memoranda’.” By using these words Squealer is confusing the animals because they do not understand the meaning of them and they just accept it. However, those were used to confuse the animals when Squealer is actually directly lying to them. Symbolism between the Russian Revolution and the revolution on Animal Farm is very closely related. In the extract it describes how the farm has gotten richer but the animals still live their hungry troubling lives. After the Russian Revolution lives of the workers were not affected, and it was the same on Animal Farm. Napoleon, who became leader after the revolution, got all the power. This is shown in the quote “Somehow it seemed as though the farm had grown richer without making the animals themselves any richer – except, of course, for the pigs and dogs.” It shows how the pigs and dogs have taken all the riches that have been made, and the animals did not get any benefits from the
