Giovanni Grade 9 8/25/2012 Each year approximately 22 million animals are used for animal experimentations. The first animal experimentation can be traced back as far as the 2nd century in the writings of the Greeks. Animal testing is necessary because it helps scientists develop medicines to prevent diseases such as polio, malaria, and syphilis. Examples of the animals that are being tested on are mice, rats, birds, fish, rabbits, cats, frogs, fruit flies, and guinea pigs. 85 to 90 percent of the animals used are rats, mice, and guinea pigs. Animal testing are being used for medical research and for education around the world. Animal experimentation has contributed to medical research in many different ways. Before the United Kingdom introduced the Meningitis vaccine in the year 1992, there were 1500 cases of Meningitis with 65 deaths and 150 children surviving with major disabilities, however, when the vaccines were found in 1994 the cases were decreased by 90 percent. Animal testing has helped scientist create a medicine for children with sickle-cell disease these children now have a greater chance of living longer lives, pain-free. Animal experimentation has helped 30,000 children in American with cystic fibrosis; a genetic disorder that affects the lungs, intestine, pancreas, and liver, live a healthier and longer life. Animal experimentation has also helped 12 million Americans ages 6 and older maintain their high blood pressure using the medications developed by the help of animal testing. Animal experimentation has also helped doctors cure and treat cancer patients. In fact, the new cancer drugs created by the help of animal testing have remarkably increased 60 percent of the cancer survival rates since 1975. Overall, these drugs have contributed 10.7 percent of the increase in life expectancy at birth in the United States of America. Animal testing
