Andrew Ure- The Philosophy of Manufactures Source Analysis This source is a written and primary source and is an extract taken from Andrew Ure’s book “The Philosophy of Manufacturers” which was published in 1835. This source tells us that child workers, in that time, were treated well in the factories and mills instead of being used as slaves. At the time, Ure attacked the factory reformers for exaggerating the health problems of industrial workers and in this source the opposite is stated and how there are children working in factories. The main point that Ure tried to across to the society of that time was what Ure called the ‘automatic factory’ and how human skill had been banished. Employees were merely machine minders. As the Industrial Revolution came by, machines displaced labour and skill. Another point that Ure is trying to get across is the fact that it just became easy for workers to get certain jobs done and really they were getting paid without doing much, ‘without perspiring at a single pore’. This source is quite reliable as it is from a published book and there is little bias as it is just the author’s opinion on what the Industrial revolution has done as it made work in factories easier. This opinion is very true as machines ended up replacing human skill and labour. This source is very useful as it informs us about what the Industrial revolution had done, as many new inventions and machines had been introduced. It also tells us about how much easier work became in factories and how you would still get paid even though you did not accomplish much in terms of doing any actual work.
