Jaime Mendez Mr. Williamson Honors US History 18 December 2012 The Truth about Andrew Carnegie “No Man of business drew more attention that the king of steel, Andrew Carnegie” (Background Essay). Andrew Carnegie grew up in Dunfermline, Scotland and immigrated along with his family to the United States in the late 1800s. He worked his way up from being a poor Irish immigrant to become one of the most famous industrialists who led the enormous expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century. There have been many debates of whether he had the traits of a hero or that he wasn’t a hero. Carnegie did not have any courage when it came to dealing with problems. “Carnegie went to Scotland shortly before the contract [with the Homestead workers] expired, thus removing himself from the scene of the battle” (Document J). The “battle” that is being referred to in that statement is the fight between the Pinkertons and the old employers. This battled started because the other employer’s contract was up and Carnegie wanted to have a nonunion instead of union workers. However, Carnegie did not want to deal with the situation himself so he went away to Scotland and had Frick deal with the issue. “On July 1st the strike began” (Document J). The old workers went on strike because they wanted to stay a union and because they went on strike Frick brought out the Pinkertons. Then while the Pinkertons were on their way to work they were attacked by the other workers. This shows how Carnegie was a coward and did not deal with his issues. Obviously Carnegie lacked the crucial trait of being courageous and he also was not strong and confident which makes up a true hero. Carnegie did have some good qualities which is why it would be understandable for people to think of him as a heroic figure. Sadly though, he used other people to his advantage and he did not exactly have all the qualities of someone thought to be a hero.
